A company that no longer exists

Nobody left at the company to ask? Ask someone who was there, or send certo your documents. What Supported by evidence means, and who sees what you send.

2 minute read

Companies close, merge and disappear. When there is nobody left at the company to confirm your job, you still have two ways to back it up.

Tell certo the company is gone

On the job, answer Does the company still exist? with No longer exists. You can add the year it closed. This is your word on your own record: certo checks the company's status itself before anything changes for anyone else.

Merged into another company? Pick that company as the employer instead. Its HR may hold your records, and you can ask them as usual.

Two ways to confirm it

When you choose Ask them on that job, the dialog asks How do you want to confirm it?

ChoiceWhat happens
Ask someone who was thereA former manager or colleague, by e-mail. They confirm on certo's page, like HR would. Read asking someone to confirm a record
Send evidence to certoDocuments or links. A person at certo checks them

Sending evidence

Tick what you have, then add the files or links:

  • payslips
  • a pension statement
  • a tax record
  • a contract or offer letter
  • a reference letter
  • old posts or press
  • something else

Files are PDFs or images; links start with https://. Choose Send to certo. A person at certo reviews them, and you get an e-mail with the answer. While a set is with certo, nobody is asked about the job.

Who sees what you send

Only certo's reviewer. Your documents never reach an employer or your page. Each time a person at certo opens them, it is logged, and you see it under Share & Access.

The outcomes

OutcomeWhat it means
Supported by evidencecerto found that your documents support the job at the company, and where they show them, the dates or the title. Anything they did not show stays Claimed
certo needs moreNothing changed on your passport. Read certo's note and send more
Not reviewedThe record changed before anybody at certo decided, so nothing was recorded

How Supported by evidence reads

It reads differently from a job the employer confirmed, on purpose. Its mark is Supported by evidence, and its card says that certo reviewed documents, that the company could not be asked, and that the employer did not confirm the line. An employer you approve sees the outcome, never your documents.

In your last five years, a supported job counts as accounted for, not as verified.

Evidence is the route for a company that is gone. If anyone who was there can still answer, their confirmation is the stronger mark.
