Free reading for subscribed passports

When a candidate's passport reads free, your ask holds no verification. The candidate still approves you, and the access pauses if their year ends.

2 minute read

Some passports cost you nothing to read. The candidate, or somebody on their behalf, has paid for a year that includes free reading for every employer they approve. You still ask, and they still decide.

Which passports read free

A passport reads free while one of these runs:

  • The candidate's own year. A candidate who pays €9.90 a year for their passport gets free reading for every employer they approve.
  • A year a university gave them. A graduate whose university sponsored their verification reads free for the employers they approve, for that year.
  • A year certo activated for them.

A sponsorship by another employer does not make a passport free for you. That employer's verification paid for its own reading and for the candidate's verification, never for other employers. You spend a verification as usual.

What changes for you

A passport that reads freeAny other passport
Asking to readHolds no verificationHolds one verification
The candidate approvesNothing is spentThe verification is spent
The candidate still decides what you readYesYes

When you send the ask, the confirmation tells you which it was: "Asked. No verification was held: this passport reads free for the employers it approves." You can ask a free passport even with no verifications left.

Free reading changes who pays, never who decides. Paying publishes nothing and opens nothing on its own.

When the candidate's year ends

Access you got through free reading lasts while the passport reads free. If the candidate's year lapses, the passport shows on your Candidates list as Paused until the candidate renews, without a link. It opens again by itself when they renew, and you do not ask again.

The candidate's confirmed records stay confirmed after a lapse. A verdict is not a subscription feature, so nothing on the passport changes; only who pays for reading it does.

Inviting a candidate whose passport reads free

An invitation always spends one verification, whatever the candidate's passport. It pays for their verification and gives you access they cannot withdraw for the first 12 months. If the candidate already has a passport that reads free and you only need to read it, asking is the cheaper route. See Asking to read a passport.
