Cyprus: why confirm a former employee's job?

Every Cypriot employer already certifies the dates of employment and the kind of work when an employee asks for a certificate as the job ends, with nothing unfavourable in it. Confirming the same facts takes a minute and helps the person into their next job. certo asks on their behalf, with their explicit consent.

Law as of 26 October 2026 · Law 125(I)/2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data, Official Gazette No. 4670 of 31 July 2018 (amended by Law 26(I)/2022); Termination of Employment Law 1967 (Law 24/1967), section 8

In short

  • The facts are already on paper. An employee whose employment ends is entitled, on asking for it, to a certificate from the employer stating the dates of the employment and the kind of work done, with nothing unfavourable to them in it (Termination of Employment Law, section 8). Those are the facts we ask about.
  • It helps the person who worked for you. A record confirmed by a former employer is what the next employer trusts. Answering takes about a minute and needs no account.
  • certo asks on their behalf, with their explicit consent. The GDPR, which applies directly in Cyprus, lets you disclose personal data with the person's consent (Art. 6(1)(a)); Law 125(I)/2018 supplements it. The person started this check themselves, for these facts and no others.
  • You do not have to answer. No Cypriot law obliges an employer to answer certo. Declining is fine.

The Termination of Employment Law

Ο περί Τερματισμού Απασχολήσεως Νόμος του 1967 (Law 24/1967). We found no official consolidated text of it online: the consolidated text in common use is on CyLaw, which the Cyprus Bar Association runs and which is not an official publication, and the original is a scan of the Official Gazette of 27 May 1967 (No. 577) that we could not read reliably as text. So we describe section 8 rather than quote it. The consolidated text we checked shows no amendment to it since 1967.

Section 8: the certificate of employment

An employee whose employment has ended, for any reason, is entitled, on asking for it when the employment ends, to a certificate from the employer stating the dates of the employment and the kind or kinds of work done (section 8(1)). Nothing unfavourable to the employee may be included in it (section 8(2)). Refusing a certificate asked for in writing, or including anything unfavourable in it, is an offence (section 28).

These are the facts we ask about, so your records already hold them. We ask nothing that could be unfavourable to the person: no opinion, no performance, no pay, no reason for leaving, nothing about health, family, beliefs or a criminal record.
